| Statement on the 921 Earthquake
The Presbyterian Church in Taiwan

Amidst the shock, grief and turmoil of
the 921 earthquake disaster, the people of Taiwan stand in solidarity. Government,
military, emergency services, local organizations, religious and Christian groups etc.
work tirelessly, side by side, united in a common purpose. The response of the
international community has been overwhelming. Each day brings with it precious
expressions of human concern as one nation after another sends messages of condolence. The
speed and efficiency with which human and material resources reached our
island from abroad moved us deeply. Words fail us. We are simply thankful.
While coming to terms with the
aftermath of this national tragedy one news item, however, brought with it another
sorrow. It was with incredulity the recently released news concerning our
neighbouring country, China and the UN reached us. The words of condolence and offer
of aid from China were reported. One and the same time the relief team deployed from
Russia announced their arrival was delayed because the Government of China would not grant
them clearance to use their airspace. The Red Cross in China warned the Red Cross of
the world community not to help Taiwan unless they went through their channel. While
on the other side of the globe the UN Secretary General announced it sought
“permission” from China to enter and aid “one of its provinces”-
Taiwan. Furthermore, China expressed gratitude to other nations for helping their people
in the “Taiwan province.” These actions contradicted China’s public verbal
expression of sympathy towards a country devastated by the earthquake. It is a
violation and an affront to all human beings and extenuated further pain to grieving
people.
Based on dignity and humanity, we
appeal, to the international community and the UN members to condemn
China’methods. In contrast the wider global community, and our own nation,
mobilized themselves into immediate action extending unconditional assistance to the
suffering victims.
On behalf of our church and people,
accept our deep gratitude for each expression of care and support received these few, but
long days. Please continue to pray for us.
